Pre-Production/Production - Evaluation

Pre-Production/Production - Evaluation

In my assignment, I was told to create and produce a new TV Drama series. To make this television drama I had to make the script for it which was approximately about 10 pages which is like 10-20 minutes of a scene or episode in the drama. In addition to this, making a DVD covers for the production and the poster will be able to attract viewers attention and will be promoting the series.

Firstly, I have looked at some examples of DVD cover, posters and scripts over the internet for ideas and what I could add to my own from Television dramas. I took a note of what font they used, the images for each type of genre and the generic conventions that were linked to the image. This enabled me to have a clear mind of what my DVD cover and promotional poster will look like in the end.

Next, I got most of my ideas by creating a questionnaire which contained questions about what people’s opinions on certain things such as for example ‘what type of genre do you like in a drama?’. I went around and asked a bunch of people to give me their views on each questions asked and this gave me an overall estimate what people like and want in a TV series. This enabled me to create my story and each character’s personality. I asked questions like ‘what time do you normally watch TV and the channel you always go on’ to allow me to choose what time and channel my TV series will be on. I organised all of my results that I got from people together and placed it onto a graph and chart to see all the final outcome of what was the most popular result. This allowed me to aim for what my targeted audience is for my drama.

It is aimed at the aged of people in their late teens or early 20’s with also people who have an interest in the sci-fi genre. Because I already know that my targeted audience is for late teenagers and early 20’s and people that like sci-fi, I have used images and colours in my DVD cover and poster to suit the required audience. The colours used were dark and mystery, this backs up the type of genre of the series. My researched information about ‘Doctor Who’ enabled me to have an idea of what images and colours to use for my production. By airing my TV series on channel ITV and using the ITV logo on my DVD cover, it helps me to make my drama to become more known throughout teenagers as this channel has many TV dramas that teenagers always watch on.

After that, I thought of a bunch of ideas that my TV series could be based on and in the end I decided to go with a TV series which is based around the Sci-Fi genre. My drama is about a high school student going on a class trip to North America and suddenly the plane malfunctions and he ends up travelling in time back to the past. He was told that he needs to find 10 pieces of puzzle to help stop the world from being destroyed in the year 2040.

I then began to create my first script of the TV series.  The first draft was to just introduce the main storyline as there was no research carried to enhance my script. In the next piece of draft there will be changes made to improve the overall of the script.

To gain more knowledge on scripts and methods to make my script better, I went online and researched on the internet to look for scripts that have been used for existing TV dramas and see how they have set out their scripts. I looked at ‘Eastenders’ script and ‘The Dumping Ground’ script and this gave me various ideas to include in my script as I compared them with my script to add additional things to it. In the second draft, I made adjustments to the first draft such as adding the location and time of when each scene occurs. When the third draft came, my script was already looking like a proper script with extra research carried out from the internet and then adding to my script.

Following that, I carried out a focus group which I asked questions on how to improve and enhance my script, an example of a question asked was ‘How can I improve my script?’ and the answers were all open question resulting in a wider range of response given. This helped and became very beneficial as it gives a wide range of solutions as to how to develop the script greater.

I then acted out the script and see if there was any problem and flaws in the script. There was no emotion when reading it out and there was too much speaking at once so to enable this to flow better, I gave each character more time to pause and take a break for a little after performing. There were also actions included to show how the character will act when reading out the script.

By the time it went to the final script, the font and sizes of the text have already been altered and the location of each event changed. There were many things that were included in the final script and have made the script resulted better.

Furthermore, in my DVD cover I have used a variety of visual and technical codes. Such as in one of the image it shows a classroom and teaching is taking place. You can tell this because of the generic conventions used for example are; desks, chairs and a smart board taking place in the scene. You can tell that this scene is taking place in London through the windows of the airplane as there is wide shot of London which includes the use of iconography as there is the London eye that is in the background of the image. There is also the direct mode of address included in the DVD cover which shows the male looking directly at the camera, this allows the audience to be linked with the characters, and this was used in the DVD cover of ‘Doctor Who’ so I decided to also do the same thing for my DVD cover. In the Poster, it shows the female and male gazes which sometimes are used in the media just for the pleasure of looking at and will be able to capture the viewer’s attention to watch the TV drama.

There is the image of the planet being overrun with the colour black and pink, this could be due to the fact that there is a binary opposition happening as the colour pink represents romance and love happening as the colour black stands for an unfriendly approach, secretive, unknown and mystery. Because the planet has half of the colour black, this creates the impression of half of the world already being corrupted and the world is about to be annihilated as the other side of pink maybe means that there is still hope and time left to do something about it.

The male and females used in the Poster relates to the proairetic and action code as they are both hold weapons that are used for violence and action. This builds the interest and suspense of the audience as they can relate this to their cultural knowledge off guns and grenades which leads to soldiers and fighting. The movement and gesture of these two protagonists seems like they are about to fight back and help save the planet. We can tell this because they each have weapons in their hand and are looking directly at the planet as if they are going to assist and aid them to save their planet back. Since the images used in the TV series of the male and female in their teenage years, this can allow the targeted audience to relate themselves to them as they could use the personal identity which they might wear something which the male and female also wear to show that they have an interest in them.

I analysed existing media products of their DVD cover and Poster and this helped in my production as I can see how they each link with the visual and technical codes in the media. The images they used have been related and what they have used was backed up and the way they promoted their posters to attract their targeted audience. The colour used was related to the type of genre in the drama.

In addition, there is the use and gratifications for watching this TV Series. The audience can watch and view this drama to be able to escape the reality of life if they are bored and sick of their life. They can enjoy themselves and escape to a new world by watching this. The audience can also build and make new personal relationships with one another by having something to talk about the next day as they have also watched this drama and can talk about it with friends.

To conclude, in order to enhance an individual’s production, the internet research must be carried out to be able to set a standard and something to work towards. Opinions and responses from others are very essential as it helps to boost the production to be more efficient and makes it to be a high quality result. Also by having knowledge of how to create and produce a DVD cover and promotional poster for a TV drama helps to choose what visual and technical codes to use and this helps to be resourceful when designing a DVD cover and Poster.

Brief

Brief

In my pre-production I have developed a six part TV series which consists of students from a high school going on a class trip to North America and the plane crashes and this made Jason to travel back to the past of year 1790. Jason sees two cities at war and he gets arrested for being mistaken as an enemy spy so he was taken to a tower where he was being prisoned.   He meets a man in there who told him that he must use that necklace in order to stop the world in being destroyed before the future of 2040 arrives. There are 10 pieces of puzzle that needs to be assembled together to open the gate of the dimensions to stop the aliens to conquer Earth. My TV series is aimed at people who like the genre Sci-Fi, and likes a bit of mystery. It is also aimed at people who are aged 15-35. My TV Series will be on channel ITV at times from 9:00pm to 10:00pm.

I was told that a way to improve my DVD cover was to add a Bonus Feature onto the back. This will be able to make it unique and will include extra things that will attract the audience and have more features such as being available in different language subtitles will make watching the series more enjoyable. By adding a quote in the front, this will make the audience want to know what will happen in the story and will buy it to watch it.

A way to improve the poster was to add the starting date of when the TV series will air and the times it is on so the audience will know when it is going to be on TV and could make plans to watch it. An additional way to make the poster look enhanced is to add the colour effects of the planet in the background in black. This is to make the image link to the story of the series with it being covered in darkness and corrupted.

Poster Analysis - Prison Break

In this poster, you can see the title ‘PRISON BREAK’ which implies what the series will be about. The use of images in this poster explains that this will be a crime, drama, thriller and mystery genre.

There is a close up shot of the male at the top, which explains his worried and tense emotion. Maybe it could mean that he is the mastermind of the break out of prison. In addition, it illustrates a direct mode of address glaring right the camera.
This probably means that this series will be mainly based about him.

In this scene at the bottom, you see four males trying to outrun the police cars at the back, this creates the feeling of worry and nervous. This clarifies that they have already broken out of prison and trying to blend in the woods at night time so it will be hard for the police to spot them.

The location in the image of this poster is at a forest as the generic conventions used are trees and grass surrounding the criminals. ‘BREAKING OUT WAS THE EASY PART’ this quote refers that there are a lot more that is going to happen in the future and it makes you think what will happen to them. The targeted audience for this series is aimed at teenagers and people aged 15-40.

Poster Analysis - The Big Bang Theory

On the poster it shows seven protagonists, with a female in the centre giving off a seductive pose, this implies that she is the male gaze in this TV series. Because she is positioned in the middle of the poster, this could signify that the show will be based mainly about her.

The way the other casts are positioned and their gesture might explain that this could be a comedy type genre with a little bit of romance in between. The title ‘the BiG BANG THEORY’ is all in bold which makes it eye-catching for viewers when they come across this.

The word ‘THEORY’ is usually linked to science which might clarify what all the people in the poster might have in common. The way they are portrayed with their hand gestures and their facial expressions give off a nerdy vibe feeling. This explains the stereotypes being used by showing the type of clothing they are wearing and the use of glasses which glasses are used as a generic convention of being a nerd and clever.

There is also the use of direct mode of address as they are all looking straight at the camera. The age rating for this show is 15+, this explains that the targeted audience is for people aged 15-35.

Poster Analysis - Friends

In this poster it shows six protagonists, with each of them linking arms in the midst of a glass of wine in their hand, this shows the connotations of coming out from a party or wedding due to the type of clothing they are wearing, which is what people wear for those types of social gathering.

There are three female and three male gazes in this poster.
Their emotions of smiling and they way they are standing implies that they are having a good time and their bond of relationship is strong, like close friends which is what the TV series is called. The title ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ will immediately explain what the show will be about and the type of genre that the audience will be expecting to see.

The image is laid out like they are just casually walking through the streets as the buildings behind shows people’s houses and shops. This gives explanation that they are just people living a normal life. There are uses of direct mode of address in this poster as it shows the woman on the left looking directly at the camera. The word ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ is all in capital letters which stands out and catches the viewers’ attention and the colour white is used to represent peace, calm and a new beginning of a story.

Report On the Generic Conventions of Two Scripts

The Dumping Ground
At the start of the script it shows a list of all of the characters who are going to be in the script and who the actors/actress who acts out their characters. There is allot of dialogue going on in this script and it states the time, date and the location of where each part is happening. Also, it shows what each character is saying and what they are doing. There are also sound effects in this script, e.g. ‘<TAXI HORN>’ that comes from the taxi. There are 16 characters that are included in this script. At the end of the script, The Dumping Ground uses ‘END OF EPISODE’ to illustrate that this is the end of the script and episode of the TV Drama.

Eastenders
Eastenders states what number the episode is at the front page of the script. There is approximately about 15 characters that are included in this script and this also states the time, date and the location of each part happening. Report On Two TV Drama Programmes

Report On Two TV Drama Programmes

Ø  Prison Break
Prison Break is on TV for about 1 hour long. There were multiple stories in this TV Drama as each character has a story being brung along with them as they appeared in the series. Although all of their stories is all linked together as they end up together at the same place in prison.  They all have the same purpose, to break out of prison. Hence the name ‘Prison Break’. They all act very serious in this show as it looks like they are determined to get out of prison. There are lots of scene changes and the location is always different when it’s changed. This TV Drama includes many characters at an approximate of 12. The way they interacted was sometimes at parts were very serious and sometimes were jokes. There was some conflict between characters as they were in fights and such.

Ø  Friends
Friends are usually on for about 35 minutes. There is usually a different story for each character, and the storyline differs depending on the episode. The scene changes and the location in this TV Drama changes a lot and they are mostly at the cafe or at their department. Sometimes the scene is on the streets. The way they interact is mostly pulling off jokes and are not serious. But there are times when they interact a little bit serious. Acted Out

Acted Out

When it was acted out, there was no emotion when reading out the script of the characters that acted out the characters, so to enable it to produce feelings and emotions I decided to add actions that they will take in order to show how they speak their part.

There was too much speaking at once, so to enable this to work better and to improve I have given each character more time to breathe in-between when speaking so that they can catch their breath to be able to continue to act their part out.

When acting out the part when Jason time traveled  a slight idea came into my mind and I added it into the script. This is making the script look better presented and additional stories being added into the script.

Focus Group

What could I do to improve on my script?

A suggestion that could help improve on the script is by changing the font size to 12 and the font style to Courier. This enables the script to look more professional and actually look like its set out like a script.

Another one would be to add extra addition story lines for each character that is introduced and talk at their past, what happened and why they are being introduced.

What did you like about my T.V Script?

The story is travelling into the future and past which sounds very interesting and the story is hard to predict. It starts off with just a normal typical life and then suddenly unexpected things start to occur and then start the beginning of a new story.

How could I improve my DVD Cover?

A way of improving my DVD cover is that the title at the front is hard to see, so to be able to make it better I will have to change the colour of the title text into a colour that makes it stand out.

Internet Research

Internet Research

I did my internet research on ‘http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/node/2000004’, this allowed me to make my script better. Some examples would be such as changing the font to ‘Courier’ and adding in INT. and EXT. This website told me the appropriate size of font to use which is size 12. In addition, it told me how to use the FADE IN and FADE OUT function for the script which can help the script look better.

DVD Cover - Analysis

Doctor Who

This DVD Cover of Doctor WHO has included the male and female gazes of the audience. The image of the DVD cover explains the genre of the TV drama series making it look very futuristic.  There are features of the direct mode of address as the male on the right seems to be looking directly at the camera, making it looking like he is looking at us. The iconography used in this cover is a time machine indicating that the series will be relating to the time of past, present and future and will be travelling back and forth. The icon of BBC at the spine indicates the channel that this TV series will be on. The font style and colour that are used in the title of the drama shows the link between the images and the word as the colours looks similar; this creates a sense of mystery as a result. It also has included the age requirement to watch this series as shows that this drama’s targeted audience is aged 15+. The title’s size is massive and in capitals so this indicates the aggressive and forceful, this is a way to be able to stand out from the rest and is eye catching. The representation of the female is shown as equal with all of the males shown.

Prison Break

The main title ‘PRISON BREAK’ is in bold, big and in capital letters. This makes it eye catching and standing out trying to get across a message. The image in the DVD cover shows 2 males running; this explains that they are on the run with a police car in the background chasing them. This represents the genre of the TV series being a crime and mystery series as the title ‘Prison Break’ is based on criminals breaking out of jail, the image creates the process of building suspense and tension of trying their best to outrun the police car. There are 2 female gazes in the DVD cover. The photos in the back of the DVD cover are screenshots of the TV series. The image in the front of the DVD cover indicates that it is fast paced as their stance is running; this shows the connotations of them rushing and panicking. The target audience this TV series is aimed is fans that are fans of these actors.

Lost

The title ‘LOST’ is in bold and in capital letters, this shows that the TV series is probably about the genre of Fantasy and Adventure. There is an image of the sky in the front cover and the people in the front are looking lost and puzzled, this highlights the fantasy and the drama of the series. The back of the cover shows a letter in a bottle being washed away, this shows the connotations of them seeking for help and a long shot of an island from a distance. The target audience of this TV series will be aimed at people that are fans of these actors or people that like this type of genre. There is the direct mode of address as the people on the cover are looking at the camera. There are male and female gazes in the front of the DVD cover. The spine of the DVD cover shows an image of the people lost so this will attract people’s attention and stands out from other DVDs so this will be able to be found easily.

Soldier 2:
He doesn’t look like one

chance that he might be a spy.
Or maybe he might be that
person’s friend?

Soldier 2:
Let’s arrest him for questioning,
since he came out of the sky with
that unidentified technology
crashing down. He looks suspicious.

Jason:
(tries to break free)
What?! Hey, let me go!

You have got to be kidding me!

Charlie spots Jason’s student ID slips out of his pocket and landed on the floor ending up next to Charlie. Charlie picks up the card and inspects it.

You’re Jason Smith?
Finally, I found you at last.

Jason:

What are you doing here?
Where is this?

Charlie:
(serious)
My name is Charlie Thompson.

I came from the future to find a
guy named Jason Smith. I was on my
way towards that big city in the
North to look for him until I saw you
and your aeroplane crashing down, I
thought you might have been the one
I am looking for so I followed you
and got captured by those soldiers
around here.

The year 2040, will be the last year
for Earth as when that time comes
everything will be completely destroyed
and aliens will be taking over our
planet so I was sent here to this time
to find him as when searching for him, it
said he was in 1790.

Why were you crashing down
falling from the sky anyway?

Jason:
Well…

FLASHBACK:
INT. Airport – Morning - 25 (2010) 07:30

The class entering the security point and it’s Jason’s turn to show his passport to the woman.

Woman:
(puts out her hand)
Passport please

Jason:
Here.

She compares the picture on the passport and then looks at me.

Woman:
(Smiles)
Have a safe flight

INT. Plane – 07:35
The class all successfully gets past and boards the plane. Jason looks outside the window. He takes a deep breath and then exhales slowly and closes his eyes.

Jason (V.O):
This weather looks really
severe, I hope everything
goes smoothly.
BACK TO:

INT. Cell – Night 17 – 23:04

                                       Charlie:
And then what? What happened after that?

                                      Jason:
The plane lost control and we crashed.

FLASHBACK:

INT. Airplane – Night 26 23:19 (2010)
The pilot seems to be struggling to control the airplane with the ruthless weather affecting the movements of the airplane. The plane seems to be out of control and moving about.

Speaker:
Passengers, this is the Captain here.
We seem to be experiencing some difficulty with the controls as the weather and heavy wind seems pretty demanding.
Please remain calm as we are currently looking at the situation and will be in control as soon as possible.

Everyone begins to panic and starts to be worried and scared. Screams and shout echoes throughout the airplane. The teacher looks out the window and sees something.

Teacher:
(panicking)
What’s that over there?
It’s too dark; my eyes can’t
seem to make a clear vision of it.

Jason:
(scared)
We seem to be moving closer
towards it.It’s like it is sucking
us in!

BACK TO:

INT. Cell – Night 17 – 23:15 (1790)

Charlie:
Ah, I see.It all makes sense now.
You should be wearing a piece of the puzzle
right? That’s how you were able
to time travel to the past.

Jason examines his necklace and spots it glowing.

Jason:
Huh? I thought this was just
a normal old necklace that my
grandfather gave to me.

Charlie:
You are the only one who can
save the world, you must use
that necklace as a key to close
the door and save our planet.
There are 10 pieces that are scattered
across the timeline that needs to be assembled together in order to be able to break the door to the dimension so we can stop the world’s destruction.

Charlie pulls out an unknown device from his pocket and shows it to Jason

Jason (V.O):
What is this technology?
Maybe he really is from
the future...

Charlie:
Here, this device will show
you what will happen if you
do not do anything.
The device shows an image of time
2040, there are enormous buildings
and all are being demolished by the
aliens invading planet Earth.
flying hoverships that holds aliens
inside has covered the air.
aliens holding in their arm weapon
machinery that fires lasers at the
buildings leaving nothing in sight.

INT. Cell – 23:25

Charlie:
I tracked down the current holder of that             necklace and this is how I ended up here.
If we change what happens in this time,
it might affect the future timeline
and the world could be saved.

Jason:
(Confused)
There is so much to take in; I don’t
really know what is going on anymore!
But I will do whatever I can in my
power to help…

Charlie:
(gets up)
(Excited)That’s the spirit!
But first, we need to find a
way out...

INT. Cell – 23:27

The sound of an explosion echoed into the distance and a soldier just appeared from the corner in the corridor, falling down on the floor screaming from pain and then became unconscious.
A girl appears and walks towards their cell and breaks them out. As she gets closer, her face makes out to be Naomi.

                     SOUND: ALARM

Naomi:
Were you the people who
came from the sky crashing
down with that mysteriously
looking technology?

Charlie:
Who’s asking?

Naomi:
My name is Naomi; I have your friend who came crashing down from the skies with you. Either help us and make us win this war, or you can rot in this cell and your friend dies.

Jason (V.O):
Friend?! There shouldn’t be
anyone else but me…

FLASHBACK:

EXT. Field - Night 17 - 22:20 (1790)

Ryan barely opens his eyes and sees himself on the other side of the airplane. He is being dragged by two women who he couldn’t make out and slowly lost conscious.

                   Ryan (V.O):
                   Whats going on…
                   Where are they taking me?

BACK TO:

INT. Cell – 23:30

                   Naomi:
Too many innocent people have died in this pointless war including my parents. I want to stop this war so that no more people will die.

                   Jason:
Well, whats the point in asking...?
You give us no choice anyway.

                   Charlie:
Fine, we’ll help you, now get us out.

Naomi takes out the keys from the soldier’s pockets and opens the door. Jason and Charlie walks out of the cell.

Naomi:
We are currently at the 50th floor. It’s not going to be easy to break out, there are countless of guards roaming around. Be careful. The alarm must have set off all the guards to be alert and they will be here any minute now so we must hurry.

Charlie:
Alright! It’s time to break out!
Are you ready?
Then let’s begin!

Naomi:
To get to the bottom floor we need to find the lift key, which should be in the control room.
It should be this way. Follow me!

INT. Control Room – 23:45

Naomi leads Jason and Charlie into the control room, dead bodies of soldiers lying around.

                    Jason:
(looks at Naomi):
                    Did… you do this?!

                    Naomi:
                   (confused)
                    No…
If I didn't, then who did?

Jason looks at the screen where all of the cameras are located and looking around the whole tower. He managed to spot one in the corner and becomes shocked due to realising it is Lucy. It shows Lucy being chained in a prison cell being beaten up with cuts, bruises and blood spilling from her.

                     Jason (V.O):
                     (muddled)
                     That’s not Lucy…
  is it?!
